| HOW MUCH LAND DO YOU REALLY OWN? by Jeffrey Steinkamp Confused about the size of your lot, parcel or piece of land? If you own a house, it probably sits upon a average 60 x 100 ft or 6000 sq. ft city lot. This lot size is almost 1/8 or .13 of an acre. A standard acre is a 209 x 209 ft square or 43,650 square feet. In other words, you could fit 43,650 1 x 1 ft flat squares inside a square acre. An oversized city lot is approximately 6,000-10,000 square ft and usually less than ¼ acre. I recently sold a house described as sitting on ¼ to ½ acre. The rectangular lot measured 110 w x 140 l or 15,400 square feet which is approximately 1/3 of an acre. Many parcels on our rolling timberlands are irregular in shape, therefore determining their corners, much less their actual size can be a difficult process (especially where the berry brambles grow high and poison oak awaits elusively to come in contact with your limbs). The first step is to find out if the land you own or want to buy has been surveyed. Try to procure an official copy of the parcel map from the actual surveying company, the County Recorder or your Realtor. Next, personally walk the property or get guidance from the seller to locate the parcel corners. (Property lines are never rounded but shot in straight lines from point to point or corner to corner.) Now take your 100 ft measuring tape to measure and record the distances from corner to corner. At this point, the hard work has been done and you should have sketched a geometrical shape with the side lengths determined. After washing thoroughly with poison oak soap, sit down with a beverage and let the geometrical computing begin. Before long you should know the square footage and acreage of the land you own?
